Northern Michigan University places a “hold” on a student’s registration, transcript request, diploma or certificate when the student has not met conditions or obligations due the university. The following are general reasons for a hold:
Academic Hold
A hold may be placed at the request of the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research on the enrollment of a student for failure to maintain the required graduate grade point average.
Grad Advisor Registration Hold
A hold is placed once on a student’s account, which will prevent registration, until the student has met his or her advisor and submitted the Plan of Study to the College of Graduate Studies and Research.
Dean of Students Hold
A hold may be placed by the Dean of Students Office on students who have unresolved or on-going disciplinary or behavioral issues.
Financial Hold
A hold may be placed by the Student Service Center for any financial obligation due to the university (bookstore charges, parking fines, tuition, room and board, etc.), current or past due. A financial hold prohibits the release of official transcripts, diplomas, and may affect the ability to register for courses.
Graduate Admissions/Registrar’s Hold
A hold may be placed by the College of Graduate Studies on the enrollment of a student who fails to provide proof of college graduation or transcripts from previous colleges attended or other required document(s).
TLC (Laptop) Hold
A hold may be placed by MicroRepair/Asset Management against a student that has failed to return their NMU issued laptop computer by the established return deadline date. Students are not eligible to keep a laptop if they are not registered or preregistered for credit earning courses at NMU. Laptop holds are removed only when the laptop has been returned; late fees may apply. Students may contact Asset Management at 906-227-1422, or 906-227-1256, or e-mail thinkpad@nmu.edu to have the hold removed. A fee may be charged to remove the hold. A TLC (Laptop) Hold also prohibits the release of official transcripts, diplomas, and may affect the ability to register for courses.
Transcript Hold
A hold may be placed on the enrollment of a student who fails to provide proof of all transcripts from previous colleges attended.
