A guest student is one who is regularly enrolled at, and eligible to return to, another college or university but who wishes to earn credit from NMU to transfer to their home institution. Guest students are eligible to enroll for any term at NMU.
Graduate students who are in good standing in a degree program are eligible to elect courses at several graduate schools in Michigan with the approval of both home institution and NMU under the MIGS program. This program is for guest scholars and enables graduate students to take advantage of unique educational opportunities throughout the state. Guest Application: Michigan Intercollegiate Graduate Studies (MIGS) Program
Procedure
- The student and home institution academic advisor decide if the NMU course(s) are appropriate to the student’s program of study and are not available at his/her home institution.
- The home advisor discusses the plan with the appropriate NMU faculty member(s).
- The NMU department is consulted to ensure that space is available for enrollment.
- Student completes a MIGS application with signatures of the NMU academic advisor, the home academic advisor, and MIGS liaison officer signifying the student is qualified and eligible.
- The MIGS liaison officer forwards the application to NMU for completion.
- Once the admission has been approved by NMU, the MIGS liaison officer at the home institution issue admissions documents and provides registration instructions, and forwards a copy of the NMU admission letter to the home institution.
- After completing the course(s), the student is responsible for arranging to have an official NMU transcript sent to the home institution. The student should also contact the home institution to indicate a transcript is being sent for posting on the academic record as MIGS graduate credit.
