BI 438 - Forensic Entomology

Prerequisites: BI 210 , BI 218 , and BI 308 , or instructor permission.

This course describes the various ways that insects are involved with forensic science, including their role in decomposition, post mortem interval, and alteration of bodies. We will explore the biology of forensically-relevant insects and explore their life history. This course describes the various ways insects can and have been used as evidence in court and explains how they can assist in solving crimes. Some materials presented in this course are graphic in nature including photographs. This class will engage directly with the NMU Forensic Research Outdoor Station (FROST) and participants will be trained to view and interact with human remains while collecting entomological specimens.
