Applied Sport Psychology, M.S.


This program will be offered in a face-to-face and online format.

The Master degree in Applied Sport Psychology is a comprehensive program that prepares students with the knowledge, skills and practical applications for success in the fields of sport psychology, mental performance consulting and sport coaching. This program addresses the eight content areas and 400-hour mentorship required for graduates to sit for the Certified Mental Performance Consultant exam through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. In addition, students in the Clinical Sport Psychology track will meet the State of Michigan education and practicum requirements to earn a Master’s Limited Psychologist Licensed Psychologist by completing the required three courses and a 500-hour psychology practicum. Courses specifically address topics that include, applied sport psychology, positive psychology, theory in sport, research and ethics in sport psychology, gender and diversity issues in sport, and positive coaching. In addition, it prepares students that are focused on coaching to motivate, teach, support and lead athletes to success using ethical and positive behaviors.

Admission Requirements

Comply with the regular Admission Requirements  of the College of Graduate Studies and Research, which includes an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0.  Preference will be given to individuals with an undergraduate degree in exercise science, psychology or a related area of study. No GRE is not required.

All Applicants must submit:

  1. Graduate admission application and fee
  2. Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions
  3. A personal statement outlining their interest in the program, expectations for the program and career goals
  4. One letter of recommendation from a professional related to sport or psychology

Electives to meet degree requirements (choose electives from approved list or from Clinical concentration)

*In the event that a student has completed a similar course in previous educational experience, a course may be taken in substitution from the listed electives or from PSY with departmental and advisor approval.

Graduation Requirements


Graduates must meet the requirements  of the College of Graduate Studies as outlined in the Graduate Bulletin in addition to the following:

  • Complete the minimum number of credits for the degree 
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA
  • Successfully complete their capstone thesis
