Athletic Training, M.S.

This program is offered in 2 formats:

  • 3+2; with undergraduate in Sports Science.  Note the 63 total credits required listed below do not include the undergraduate requirements.
    • Students will apply while their sports science degree is in progress, but sports science program course completion (see details below) must be documented with transcripts prior to the start of the athletic training program. 
  • Stand alone - Masters in AT for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree.

Admission Requirements

  • The GRE is NOT REQUIRED for admission to this program.
  • For 3+2 applicants:
    • A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0.​
    • Completion of (or concurrent enrollment in) the NMU Sports Science Undergradaute core course*
      • ATR/ES 110 (2 cr.) - Introduction to Athletic Training
      • BI 207 (4 cr.) - Human Anatomy & Physiology I 
      • BI 208 (4 cr.) - Human Anatomy & Physiology II 
      • CH 111 (5 cr.) - General Chemistry I
      • CH 112 (5 cr.) - General Chemistry II
      • ES 315 (4 cr.) - Physiology of Exercise 
      • ES 317 (3 cr.) - Anatomical Kinesiology
      • HL 125 (3 cr.) - Emergency Care for the HCP
      • HL 260 (3 cr. ) - Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology
      • HN 210 (4 cr.) - Human Nutrition
      • PH 201 (5 cr. ) - College Physics I
      • DATA 109 or PSY 201 (4 cr.) - Intro to Statistics OR Psychological Research I: Statistical Applications
      • ES 417 (3 cr.) - Biomechanics 
      • ES 421 (3 cr. ) - Physiology of Training for Sport 
  • For Stand Alone applicants:
    • Comply with the regular Admission Requirements  of the College of Graduate Studies and Research, which includes a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0, and
    • Completion of the following pre-requisite courses or their equivalents (degree completion must be documented with official transcripts prior to the start of the athletic training program):
      • Biomechanics (1 course)
      • Chemistry (1 course)
      • Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology (1 course)
      • General Biology (1 course)
      • Health & Wellness (1 course)
      • Human Anatomy & Physiology (2 courses)
      • Nutrition (1 course)
      • Psychology (1 course)
      • Physics (1 course)
      • Statistics (1 course)

*Additional information regarding undergraduate sports science coursework & pre-requisites for students pursuing the 3+2 SS/ATR program:

  • Students are not required to complete ES 422 as a part of the undergraduate sports science program. Rather, students will complete this course at the graduate level as a part of the master’s in athletic training program.
  • Students must complete HP 200, but are not required to complete the additional three HP credits.
  • Students are not required to complete the SS cluster minor.
  • Students must complete a course in General Biology (although not required as a part of the SS undergraduate program) per 2020 CAATE Accreditation Standards. At NMU, students can choose to take either BI 100 or BI 111.

All Applicants must:

  • Complete the application through the Athletic Training Central Application System (ATCAS)
  • Complete the NMU Graduate School Aplication   

You will also need to supply:

  • Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions (completed as a part of the application process)
  • Proof of a minimum of a 3.0 overall GPA upon submission of application evidenced through official transcripts
  • Completion of a formal interview with members of the athletic training faculty and selected staff. This will be scheduled on an individual basis following the submiission of the applicaton. Interviews may be conducted either in person or virtually.
  • Completion of the Technical Standards Form (completed as part of the application process)

Application Due Dates & Selection Process

Rolling admissions begin on July 1 and end on February 1.  Applications received after February 1 will be reviewed on a space-available basis until the final admission deadline of April 15.  All steps must be completed and admission requirements met for your applicaiton to be reviewed by the school. 

Early application is encoraged due to limited space.

ATCAS application 

NMU application

  • Review of Applications - Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted through the application window of July 1-February 1..
    • Applicants that DO NOT have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher may be considered for admission.
  • Program Interviews - Candidates will be contacted for a program interview following the submission of the application.  Interviews may be conducted either in person or virutally.
  • Program Selection - Applicants will be notified of acceptance or denial following the program interview.
    • Admission into the master’s in athletic training program is COMPETITIVE; therefore, admission is not guaranteed. Selections for admission will be the collective decision of the full-time athletic training faculty, with the approval of the dean of the graduate school. Program cohort size is limited, so early application is encouraged.
    • 3+2 applicants - Students not selected for admission into the master’s in athletic training program will be on track to complete the NMU undergraduate program in sports science.
  • Program Commitment by Student - Students will be required to accept their admission decision in order to secure their spot in the program.
  • Starting the Program - Students admitted to the Athletic Training master’s program will begin coursework the summer (usually the 2nd week of May) following their admission and will enter into a student cohort.

Graduation Requirements


Graduates must meet the requirements  of the College of Graduate Studies as outlined in the Graduate Bulletin in addition to the following:

  • Complete the minimum number of credits for the degree 
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA
  • Successfully complete capstone course ATR 572
