Mathematics, M.S.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a program of graduate study leading to a Master of Science degree in the field of Mathematics. The program is designed to increase competence in the core mathematical fields of linear algebra, topology, and analysis. The student will complete a project or thesis pertaining to an area of interest to the student under the direction of an advisor. If a student elects for the thesis option, submission of a written manuscript and an oral defense of their thesis work is required. If a student elects for the project option, submission of a written manuscript is required. If a student elects for the actuarial project option, they must pass two internal or external professional actuarial exams not already passed. The program is designed to prepare the student for creative professional work in mathematics, to teach mathematics at the post-secondary level, or for further study at the doctoral level.

*Note about the Accelerated Mathematics Program

Undergraduate students declared in a mathematics bachelor degree are eligible to start the accelerated program if:

• Minimum 3.0 overall GPA
• Minimum 3.25 GPA in mathematics courses 
• Permission of the Mathematics Graduate Committee
• If approved, students may take:
  • One graduate course in mathematics, if in first semester of third year and have completed 72 or more undergraduate credits
  • One graduate course in mathematics, if in second semester of third year and have completed 84 or more undergraduate credits
  • One graduate course in mathematics, if in their first semester of fourth year and have completed 96 or more undergraduate credits
  • Two graduate course in mathematics, if in their final semester and have completed 108 credits or more
• Maximum of 5 graduate courses while pursuing undergraduate degree
• Must graduate with their undergraduate degree in mathematics before any additional graduate courses can be taken
• The graduate courses will not count toward undergraduate degree or course/credit requirements
• Upon completion of the undergraduate degree and accepted application to the College of Graduate Studies and Research, the graduate courses will count toward the Master of Science degree in Mathematics

Admission Requirements

• Comply with the regular Admission Requirements  of the College of Graduate Studies and Research
• An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0
• Completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or equivalent

All Applicants must submit:

1. Graduate admission application and fee
2. Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions
3. Two letters of recommendation
