The Dance major at NMU focuses on technique, composition, performance, pedagogy, and science to create well-rounded, thinking dance professionals. Whether a chosen focus is on stage or behind the scenes, students will have the option to add on a “track” to the required coursework to create an individualized educational experience based on their needs post-graduation.

General Education 30-40 Credits
Dance Major 56-80 Credits
Dance Foundation Courses 50 Credits
Technique 12 Credits
The following DAN courses may be taken up to two times for credit. Click on each course description for more information. Choose 12 credits from the following: Choreography and Performance 15 Credits
History and Theory 8 Credits
Field Experience 1 Credit
Production and Management 7 Credits
Dance Track Options 22-24 Credits
Students may add one track from the following optional tracks: Dance Science Track 22 Credits
Dance Business Track 24 Credits
Choose 24 credits from the following: Cluster Track 24 Credits
With adviser approval, select a cluster of cognate courses from two or more departments totaling 24 credits. A course list must be submitted to the Registrar before the second semester of the student’s junior year. Electives 6-18 Credits
Students may choose any DAN course not used in other requirements for the major. Courses that can be taken up to two times for credit may be used as an elective if taken a second time. Notes:
