Students wishing to pursue a career in pharmacy must attend pharmacy school and obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. The prerequisites for any pharmacy school may be completed at Northern Michigan University; however, students must apply to an accredited pharmacy program outside of NMU after completing the required prerequisites and/or obtaining a bachelor’s degree. It is highly recommended that students interested in the pre-pharmacy track join the NMU Pre-Pharmacy Club and seek out opportunities to work as a pharmacy technician at a local pharmacy. In the state of Michigan, three institutions offer a Pharm.D. degree - Ferris State University, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. Past NMU pre-pharmacy students have also attended the School of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, among other out-of-state programs.
The specific courses you should take in the pre-pharmacy program at Northern Michigan University will vary depending on which pharmacy school you are planning to attend. However, some of the courses that are common to many pharmacy schools are listed below.
