Pre-veterinary students who are residents of Michigan normally plan an academic program to meet requirements for admission to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University, though NMU students are also routinely accepted into veterinary programs at other institutions. Requirements for most veterinary colleges can be met at Northern Michigan University, where students take specified courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, college composition, social science and humanities. Students are strongly advised to complete a bachelor’s degree at Northern Michigan University, typically in Biology, though other majors are acceptable as long as the specified pre-requisite courses are completed.

The Pre-veterinary Medicine Handbook, available from the Biology Department, provides useful information for students interested in pursuing the pre-vet track. Factors considered in acceptance of students into the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University include legal residency, grade point average in the last 3 semesters of college course work, grade point average in required pre-veterinary science courses, average course load per semester, a personal interview, essay, letters of recommendation, extent of veterinary and animal-handling experience, and extracurricular activities.
