Secondary Education Special Education Major

Students with a major in secondary education special education must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or greater overall, in the major, and/or minor(s) with no grade below a “B-” in the professional education sequence and no grade below a “C” in the major and/or minor(s).

Teaching Major, minimum 36 credits - Secondary Special Education teacher candidates are required to have a teachable grades 7-12 secondary subject-area major in addition to the cognitive impairment or emotional impairment specialty area. Teachable secondary grades 7-12 major areas available at NMU are:

• Secondary Education English Major  (44 credits);
• Secondary Education Mathematics Major  (42 credits);
• Secondary Education Social Studies Major  (52 credits);
• Secondary Education Integrated Science - Biology (Option I) Major  (56-57 credits);
• Secondary Education Integrated Science - Chemistry (Option II)  (60 credits);
• Secondary Education Integrated Science - Earth Science (Option III) Major  (62-64 credits); or
• Secondary Education Integrated Science - Physics (Option IV) Major  (62 credits).
