Sociology and Anthropology at NMU
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers major programs in sociology and anthropology. The department also offers minor programs in anthropology and sociology. The Food, Environment and Society (FES) Minor is housed within the Sociology Program. The department also participates in the interdisciplinary minors in gender studies and international studies.
The sociology program at Northern is designed to increase the understanding of human social behavior. The program emphasizes both theory and methodology, particularly as these may be brought to bear on the study of human interaction, social institutions, or analysis of contemporary social problems. Students have the opportunity to investigate a variety of substantive areas such as environmental sociology, social class, gender and sexuality, family, minority groups, religion, death, dying, and grieving, and social justice and social change.
