Prerequisites: Sophomore standing, or instructor permission.

This course covers the cultural history of China from the Opium War to the twentyfirst century. Emphasis on change from empire to nation, from Republic to People’s Republic, and from Maoism to present-day totalitarian neoliberal capitalism. In addition, it addresses historical questions of race, class, gender, sexuality, the environment, and social justice in modern China.
